Hello folks. I'm posting this up as a favour to a friend on my course. Basically, he's been a part of organising a nationwide inter-uni gaming tournament. (Sploosh, apparently you should know about this already.) If anyone is interested in this, they should check out the website for information.

There are one night cups going on for SC2, HoN, DotA, CSS, COD4 and TF2.

Team registrations can be done at register.thenuel.com, and interested parties should sign up on the forum, join IRC (#nuel quakenet) or email staff@thenuel.com.

    [END OF SHAMELESS ADVERTISEMENT]

I thought seeing as so many folks are TF2 players perhaps there might be a few people interested in this (I'm looking at you, Simon..) Anyway, as I don't really know much about what's planned here I'd advise you email the guy in charge if you have queries. His name is Josh and he's a decent person, so I'm sure he'd be willing to help anyone out.

As a random guess, might this friend be the one behind the other shameless advertising for this stuff (i.e. here and here)?

For the record, I am neither for nor against this, but trying to make the connection. I'm not much a TF2 player myself.

The TF2 tourny is on Wednesday the 4th at 7pm.
Its 6v6 vanilla + basic medic unlocks (Kritzkrieg, Blutsauger and Ubersaw).
Medic, heavy, demo are limited to 1 per team, all other classes limited to 2.

(i think this is right, they keep talking about changing maps and weapon allowances)

    Is anyone signing up?

How many people have signed up to this from the rest of the UK? I'm just curious as there doesn't seem to be many people on the forums, let alone singed up to the cup.

    As much as I would love to play the TF2 one;

    A) There are 6 better players than me, easily.

    B) I'm busy that night.

Would be good to see Simon destroy everyone.

I'd be tempted to try and watch, to see if Simon is actually any good when against other decent players ;)

I find it funny the guy running it is at Loughborough Uni, yet not in the computer society.

Nor has he been to a LAN to that of my knowledge.

I've seen this before and they've emailed us directly. I think it's pretty lazy that they haven't even been to one of our LANs or spoken to us in person seeing as two of them reside in Loughborough.

The email we got was selling the 'NUEL' to gamers, but I didn't see it as being beneficial at all to our society. Why would it be?

All we got was an email that was no doubt sent to multiple university societies.

    From their site:

"We will work to create strong partnerships with university gaming/computer societies"

Maybe they should turn up in that case, then I'd be happy to discuss this with them.

When he first wanted to run it, he was asking for money, which to me stunk of him running it for profit.

I don't see what experience he has of doing this. Running Leagues and tournaments on this scale is alot of work. I know from experience.

He also made a bit of a faux pas by posting on a Heaven Media owned forum, they own enemydown.co.uk, the UK's biggest gaming ladder.

Considering CompSoc is running the biggest uni LAN in the country, you would assume one would approach the society as to some kind of joint venture, or at least ask for help.

My brother tried to start the Uni gaming league, it didn't work as people were either tied to a clan already, or not willing to take it seriously.

Perhaps times have changed, but the intention could be to set this site up, then sell it on to another ladder for thousands.

Might be a bit cynical of me, but a guy who starts out by charging for membership is doomed, all ladders are free unless you offer added value, which the NUEL are not. To me that smacks of arrogance and a complete lack of understanding of how UK gaming ladders work.

So is anyone seriously interested in this? By looks of it, it will only be 2-3 games due to knockout format and we only need 6 players.

Might be a bit of fun.

Making a proper thread about it now, we should get 6.
